Surprise! Spanish Wells has Internet! We are going to get
their internet code tomorrow and see if I can download pictures. In the
meantime…
We got up at 6 am and were moving by 6:45 am. It was NOT a
good sailing day. The wind was 45 degrees of our starboard and we had to motor,
Stephane would have said stay put, but now that we are on the move, we want to
keep going. And the motor has not had a good run for awhile.
We arrived in Spanish Wells around6:00 and picked out spot
at the dock. It’s not very busy here at this time of year so we are only paying
$1.50 a foot but I don’t think there are any showers to speak of. Oh well.
I’m getting used to being salty and rinsing in two cups of fresh water.
Tonight we walked to
the closest restaurant and found out they only take cash, but some guy picking
up his take0out offered to drive us the 10 blocks to the ATM in the opposite
direction! The only bank here is RBC so of course we paid an exorbitant amount
to take out some money! Then we went the restaurant right beside the bank which
was easier. It was like MacDonald’s only Bahamian. Mostly kids and everyone was
talking very loudly but oh, the food was good! BBQ chicken, rice and peas and Cole
slaw for me. Rick had the same thing except Mac & cheese [Caribbean style -
baked like lasagna] instead of Cole slaw. Then we walked the 10 blocks back to
the boat.
So the one grocery store is closed until Tuesday but we
really need fruit and veg’s o I hope the other one is open tomorrow. We can find out when we got to the office to
pay for our dock space. The boat beside us looks like a luxury hotel suite…
half again as wide and long as us. They just popped over from Florida to do some
fishing.
This is a very tidy island…no garbage; all the houses are
clean and painted; lawns cut; nice flower gardens. It sounds like most everyone
is Dutch by the accent; that and Kiwi or Aussie or a mixture of all; and no
Black people were working at either restaurant that we were in. Everyone drives golf carts or small cars, and
every house has a garage. So I have to wonder… with all this money here and
[there’s a lot!] how can there be a problem with hurricanes?
Anyway, we are beat so we are going to bed. G’nite!
