Today
was interesting. When the dock master asked if we’re going out for a “stroll’,
we told him we were going to walk to the north end of the island.
He
laughed and said, “no, you not.”
I
said, “It’s only a couple of miles.”
He
said, “What you mean, ‘couple miles’?”
I
said, “Ok, 3 or 4 miles.”
“No”,
he replied, “it’s 9 miles. You can walk there and take a cab back or you can
take a cab out there an’ walk back, but you ain’t gonna walk it all.”
So
we walked about 2 miles out and 2 miles back; from Alice Town to Bailey Town.
We
came back along the shore road, and stopped at CJ’s Diner. When we talked to
the cook about the conch fritters, she said she could cook them in my flour if
I took her some, so we walked back up the road with some. For lunch we had
conch fritters, rice and peas and plantain. It was so big we split it for
$12.00. It was really good but I liked the rice and peas better than the conch
so I won’t be having that again. Conch doesn’t have much taste, as with any
fish, and it’s chewy.
We
came back to the boat and gathered the fuel cans and went for fuel. Rick took
the camera and walked to the south end o the island at the channel to see the
wreck of the Gallant Lady, and the cemetery, but I stayed here and did some
tidying up. After that we sat in the lounge chairs on the beach and read fir
awhile Pearl came by and said they were going up to the other marina to meet a
the boaters who had left from No Name Harbour, so we went with them and met a
whole new crowd. Most appear to be heading back to the States in the next few
days, but some are going further south. We
were there until 7:30 and had a good time.
The
weather is still stormy, rain on and off and the winds are still high. We are
hoping to get away tomorrow but it is doubtful. According to one of the
boaters, the weather should get better for heading south by June. And as usual
we are doing the one thing sailors should never do and that is try to follow a
schedule.
So
we had a quick supper and now we are getting ready for bed. Tomorrow morning we
will walk to the post office and send some post cards to the kids.
Can't load pics right now ...internet not very reliable. Will try again later
