Today was a day f surprises.
First of all it rained all night and most of the morning. I managed to wash my hair in the kitchen sink just as Mike arrived
to take us for lunch. We went to the Mess on the base and it was just as I
remembered it (from Navy League OTC- Officer training courses).
It’s an odd feeling to be
surrounded by a crowd of soldiers! It’s like being inside a giant life jacket.
It was exciting and sad to see the activity going on, knowing where they were heading,
and realizing that they all accept it as simply the job they chose to do.
Lunch was great and Mike
explained a lot of what happens on the base, the new construction and
improvements being made. There were a bunch of SAR-techs sitting at one table.
(You can tell because they wear orange jumpsuits instead of camo). I kept
looking to see if I recognized any of them and suddenly realized that when I
was working with Search and Rescue in Thunder Bay, these guys were all in kindergarten
or day care. It sucks getting old!
So as we were getting
ready to meet Mike, Barb texted and said they would come down for dinner! And stay
overnight so we could have a shower! Awesome! Mike told us that Dan should be
able to stay on base because he’s a vet. There’s a hotel on the base that
transients and vets can stay in when they come through town.
When we got back from
lunch the sky cleared to I went to work on the other side of the hull and got a
coat of paint o it as well. Barb and Dan
arrived and we went out to the base so they could get a room. After dinner we
did the base tour so we could see where they used to live.
So in all this, we were
tracking the parts. As of this morning, (Friday/17th) they were on the delivery truck out of Brampton. We were assured that they will be delivered sometime today. Probably about 5pm. Because
we could install them today...and
the weekend forecast is for Nor’westers gusting to 50kph and dropping
temperatures... lows of 1 or 0 degrees by
Monday. Brrr
So when Barb comes back
after breakfast, we’re going to laundry, Rick will work on the freezer some more
and an will be posted guard waiting for the DHL guy to show up.
Will keep you posted!
