Monday
Nov.10
It’s
11:30 am and we are about 15 miles from Chesapeake Bay going in to Deltaville,
Virginia. I need to go to the Waterway Guide office, and sign my new contract
for the Turks and Caicos [That’s my next assignment!!!] and meet the managing
editor.
Then
we head down to Norfolk and into the ICW. It was a great decision to do the
ocean instead of the C&D canal. It will have taken about 36 hours to get
there instead of7 days if we had gone the other way. The night crossing was
easy... only one set of fishing boats called us to tell us how to avoid their
nets. The stars we out, the moon was full and we could see easily where we were
going. This morning at 6:00 a pod of dolphins passed me and later when Rick was
at the helm, they showed up for him too!
We
were about 3-5 miles off shore in water no deeper than 50 feet. Remember
studying the continental shelf in school?
Well that’s what we are running on. The fishing boats have to go miles
out to sea to get the deep water fish.
The
Delaware shore is nothing but marsh and sand islands. Chincoteague Island is
where the wild ponies are, in a nature preserve. At night there is nothing to
see on the shore. This morning isn’t much better...shore grass and sand. The water
temperature is 14.5 down here and today I was sailing in a t-shirt!
We
came into Cape Charles Harbour and got a dock. We are beat and it took longer
to get into the Bay because of the outgoing tide. We had showers [YEAH!!!] and
went for dinner at a bar on the dock called Shanty. They had half the menu
gluten free! I had fish and chips... it was FRESH caught haddock.OMG it was
awesome! And we are exhausted ,
goodnight,
