Monday Nov 17
We woke up early this morning
and watched as most of the boats headed down stream to catch the early bridge
and first lock opening at 8:30. We waited for the 11:30 opening because we knew
we wouldn’t make the first opening and we weren’t in a hurry. So we took our
time and had breakfast and cleaned up before we left. C-Soul was waiting as
well as Alethea. We were all talking about the weather and discovered that
there is going to be a storm tomorrow [Tuesday] so we all decided we’d stay in
Elizabeth City because after the City there is nothing for two days until we
get to Oriental.
The run down the river was
beautiful, slow and peaceful [except for the noise of motors] But coming into
the lock, the lock master advise us that there was a tornado watch until 6 pm
tonight. It’s a little unnerving when you are in a narrow channel and you can’t
see past the trees to watch the sky!
We arrived in Elizabeth
City in windy conditions and had to negotiate a very narrow bridge opening with
a working tug on the other side. The free docks are simply spaces between huge
pilings and at the dock there is a number that tells you how wide the spaces
are! We decided to go to the wall, but
there are huge pilings that hold you off the cement / steel wall and make it
almost impossible to get off the boat. We parked in front of the big blue
trawler (see yesterday’s pics) and he helped us pull in. C-Soul parked ahead of
us and Rick left me on the boat to help Mark, then they both came back to
finish tying us off.
In talking to another boat
it seems that the sky will clear tonight and the temperature tonight and tomorrow
will be 0C degrees! I think I will be getting a room in a hotel. Rick can stay
on the boat if he wants to! The weather will clear by Thursday, and we will move
on. There are no power hook-ups here so we can’t run the heater. However today
was 20 C degrees. This up and down is hard on the body...we need to get to Florida!
So it’s going to be a rocky night and we’ll see what tomorrow brings...pics are
of the trip today.
