Only 14 more
shopping days ‘til Christmas!!!
Today we woke up
to the sight of a huge barge bearing down on us...stadium- bright lights and
motor pounding away. He missed us of course because we were off the Channel,
but it was 6:00 am!! And DARK!
So we got up, and
started the day. We managed 21 miles by noon and started down the ICW from Mile 484 and wound our way through swamp
grass and crab pots. We are still in the low country which we up north would cal
swamp, but it’s not mucky or smelly. It’s open grasslands that happen to be
covered with salt water part of the day. Dolphins come in from the ocean to
fish in here, and get in our way. Did I really say that?!?! They are still
awesome but they keep bumping the boat. Gail is sure that it’s because of the colour.
She says they’re not stupid and they have awesome sonar so they must really
like the yellow and blue boat! They haven’t hit C-Soul yet and they are black
bottom/ white hull.
The most exciting thing we saw today was shipyard in the middle of
nowhere. They were working on military ships. If it was supposed to be a
secret, they shouldn't have put in on the ICW!!
C-Soul called us to
say that they were staying in the anchorage because it was beautiful and calm,
so we pulled in around 1:00 pm. As we were coming in we could see smoke and the
closer we got the more it looked like it was coming from the anchorage. But it
turned out to be a prescribed burn.
We are anchored,
doing chores and exploring. We went to shore because there was a dock and a
boat there but it was a US Fish and Wildlife boat and the signs said No
Trespassing, so we didn’t. This entire ICW shoreline appears to be a wildlife
refuge from Virginia down, except where people live, and most of it has
restricted access.
So we are having
potluck with C-Soul tonight. There are now 4 boats in the anchorage, looks like
a parking lot. Wonder how many there will be by morning!
Tomorrow we will
be in Beaufort (pronounced “bewfurt”: “bofort” is in North Carolina – and DON”T
mix them up!)
Rick is busy cutting
more holes in the boat...I don’t even ask any more...as long as I can smell
wood, not fibreglass, it’ ok. Wood is
above the waterline!
When we leave Beaufort,
it will be just another day’s travel to Georgia! But the Marina we’re are going
to sounds like a Spa so we might be there a bit!!

made us a little nervous...hot ash winds and sails!! |

Hi Susan and Rick,
Testing your comment box here.
Minus 1 and snowy in Owen Sound today. Snow day. School buses cancelled etc etc. But the sun is now shining. Major snow just to the east of us. Looks like the hurricane season really did not materialize this year. That's good for you guys. Enjoying your blog.
