MArch 9

March 9, 2015

What a day!  We are on daylight savings time with the rest of the Eastern seaboard, so it stays lighter here at night now, but we get up in the dark at 6:30-7:00 am. Yeah, I know... sucks to be us...

Today we headed down to the post office to mail the cards for the kids. It only cost 50 cents to mail them anywhere in the world from here. What are we doing wrong?

But before we got to the post office, we stopped at the other marina because some guy was going into the shark tank to film bull sharks that inhabit the harbour here.  So they cut up fish and spray chum in the water, and for $100.00/ ½ hr you can get in the shark tank and take pictures. They have a hookah diving system you can use. There were four big sharks and lots of remoras [the fish that hang out with sharks], and we watched them feeding.

After that we walked down to BaTelCo to see if they could unlock one of our phones... nope, so we bought a phone from them...CHEAP, and we are now pay-as-you –go in the Bahamas so we don’t need to use the sat phone and we can text.

On the way back we meet the most interesting man! He was sitting in his yard, making turtles out of shells and conch feet!! He talked to us for quite awhile about how he has been all over the world; he has 4 sons and they are all pilots; his grandson just joined the US Navy and went to Japan... but his phone kept ringing so we are going back to see him tomorrow. We took some really nice conch shells up for him that we found in the water when we went swimming, and left them on his wall. He told us all about conchs and how during WWII the Brits came over and gathered all the coconuts to make life jackets!! There used to be a law here that if you took coconut fro someone’s tree you got a month of hard labour; two coconuts= 2months, etc. He thinks it’s still on the books!!  We won’t be stealing any coconuts! So much interesting stuff.

Then we met the guy who is rebuilding the hotel behind our artist all by himself. His name is Ashley Saunders and he’s been at it for 22 years. It’s called the Dolphin House and he lives there. It’s a gift shop, hotel and museum and we are going back tomorrow to see it as well.

Th Wreck of the Gallant Lady
re and they all seem to be cats!! But a HUGE mega-yacht came in last night and tied up behind us. Rick went out to help of course, and got to talk to the owner, while the captain was busy with his remote control thrusters! They were from Milton ON although’ the boat is registered in the BVI’s. They left this morning to go back to the States.

So we are at the dock again tonight and tomorrow we will go out to anchor to wait for the weather systems to settle down. We have the dinghy and we can get in and out when we want to. Or just sit on the boat and do nothing!!!

I am sitting under the palm trees writing this because I can reach the Internet better here, but I hate to say this...it’s getting colder...like 75 maybe? The wind is up and the sun is going down. Yeah, I know, sucks to be us.  G’ nite!
No stealing the coconuts!
